Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas – Major Drinks in Minor Volumes
Starting from Scratch
It is presumably difficult to believe that what started as an idea to sell canned fish to Germany ended up being shipping the finest of beers to the USA. However, that actually happened, and it is only one of the unlikely stories that Laitilan Wirvoitusjuomatehdas has been a part of during its short history.
This little company was born in 1994 in humble surroundings; its first production line consisted of a soda stream machine and an assortment of empty bottles.
One’s Thirst for Beer Can Only Be Quenched with Beer
The company first produced sodas and cider, but the founders always had the burning desire to become real beer brewers, and to create a beer of unmatched quality and taste. This feat was ultimately achieved in 1997 when the first Kukko beer was introduced to the Finnish public. Rumor quickly spread and the public’s thirst for Kukko grew, and by 2001 the company acquired a canning machine to be able to cater for the growing demand of the beer. At this point both the recipe and process had also been perfected and have not been altered since.
Kukko quickly established itself as a sought after premium beer on the Finnish market, with particularly its Pils variant winning trophies and gaining all kinds of recognition for its taste during its infancy. Kukko had become a real beer brand, though perhaps still just a small brand among the plethora of giant global beer brands.
A Pleasant Surprise
Obviously the founders were overjoyed that they had created a beer so loved by the consumers, but little did they know that by taking this small step in ”the world history of beer”, they had also simultaneously taken a giant leap for people with coeliac disease; in Kukko they had created the world’s first gluten free 100 % barley malt beer.
Initially the company did not know that its beers were gluten free, and it wasn’t until a company outsider gave a hint of this fact, that they actually started to dig into the issue.
The gluten contents of each product were immediately tested, and after a rigorous and thorough testing regime Kukko beers were officially declared as gluten free in 2005.
From that day on the mission of Kukko beers has been to provide the best possible beer drinking experience for all mankind – including those with coeliac disease. And the time has now come for the beer connoisseurs of USA to have a chance at this experience.
